Made in America
Made in America: My Story
Sam Walton
What it’s about
The book is a classic rags-to-riches tale emphasizing grit, risk-taking, believing in your vision even when others doubt it, and long-term compounding. Success didn't come overnight—Walmart was a slow build over decades, starting small and scaling through discipline. In the book, Walton (and Huey) radiate optimism and share down-to-earth wisdom, and a belief that capitalism—rooted in serving people—can create massive value. Walton comes across as genuinely humble (despite his wealth), family-oriented, and proud of Walmart's impact on communities and the economy.
Why I like it
I like his simple and heartfelt explanations for why trusting in your people, and allowing the market economy to do it’s job to provide the information and incentives needed to best allocate the resources of our planet to serve the people, work to deliver a successful business and value to millions of employees and consumers.
